Founded in 1865, the University of Maine is a land and Sea Grant institution and the flagship campus of the University of Maine System. This vibrant and dynamic university serves the residents of Maine, the nation, and the world through our acclaimed programs in teaching, research, and outreach.

UMaine’s Leadership

Joan Ferrini-Mundy is the 21st president of the University of Maine and its regional campus, the University of Maine at Machias, and the vice chancellor for research and innovation for the University of Maine System. The Provost, John Volin, oversees the six colleges and schools at the University of Maine, as well as its regional campus in Machias, the Division of Lifelong Learning, and Cooperative Extension.

Our Location

UMaine is located on Marsh Island between the Stillwater and Penobscot rivers in Orono, and is approximately 5 miles from Bangor. Maine is home to some of the country’s most spectacular destinations, including Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor and Mount Katahdin.
