Course Descriptions
Which class is right for me?
UMaine Training and Safety offers a variety of courses geared both towards those who are working in the health care field and those who are not. We offer four different types of classes, Healthcare Provider (HCP), Heartsaver, First Aid, and Blood-Borne Pathogens. We teach all courses to the standards of the American Heart Association (AHA).
Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers ($55)
The BLS for Healthcare Providers course is designed to provide a wide variety of certified or noncertified, licensed or nonlicensed, healthcare professionals with the skills to keep people alive until they can be brought to a hospital or be treated with more advanced lifesaving measures.
Course Length & Examination:
- approximately 4 hours
- Students will practice their skills and are tested with a certified American Heart Association BLS instructor.
The BLS course covers
- Adult and pediatric CPR
- Two-rescuer scenarios and use of the bag-valve mask
- Foreign-body airway obstruction (conscious and unconscious)
- Automated external defibrillation (includes child AED update)
- Special resuscitation situations
- Other cardiopulmonary emergencies
- Stroke and cardiac arrest
BLS training is intended for certified or noncertified, licensed or non-licensed, healthcare professionals, including:
- Physicians
- Nurses
- Paramedics
- Emergency medical technicians
- Respiratory, physical and occupational therapists
- Physician’s assistants
- Residents or fellows
- Medical or nursing students in training
- Aides, medical or nursing assistants, and other allied health personnel
Certification:
- American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Course Completion Card is valid for two (2) years.
Heartsaver® First Aid, CPR & AED ($25 First Aid only, $30 CPR AED Only, Discounted $45 when taken together)
The Heartsaver® First Aid, CPR & AED course provides first responders with training in basic first aid and CPR & AED procedures – including the first aid skills recommended by OSHA – in a format that can be delivered in a single day.
Course Length and Examination:
- approximately 3-4 hours for CPR & AED
- approximately 3 hours for First Aid
- Students will practice their skills and are tested with a certified American Heart Association BLS instructor.
The course covers:
- First Aid Basics
- Medical Emergencies
- Injury Emergencies
- Environmental Emergencies
- Adult, Child and Infant CPR/AED & Choking
The Heartsaver® First Aid, CPR & AED course is intended for all individuals who have a duty to respond to a first aid or cardiac emergency of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements, including:
- Security and airline personnel
- Camp counselors
- Police and Firefighters
- Teachers and day-care workers
- Aerobics teachers/physical-fitness trainers
- Other individuals who want or need first aid training
Certification:
- American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Course Completion Card that is valid for two (2) years.
**The course is structured with the First Aid portion at the beginning and the CPR/AED portion at the end. Students have the option of taking the entire course or leaving before the CPR & AED section begins.
Heartsaver® Bloodborne Pathogens ($15)
The Heartsaver® Bloodborne Pathogens course is designated to meet Occupation Safety and health Administration (OSHA) requirements for bloodborne pathogens training when paired with site-specific instruction.
Heartsaver® Bloodborne Pathogens uses the PACT acronym and slogan to help students learn and retain what to do when there is danger of or has been exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the workplace. Students learn how to:
- Protect yourself
- Act when exposed
- Clean yourself and the area involved
- Tell or report any exposure
Course Length and Examination:
- approximately 1 hour
- no written examination is required for this certification
Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens is intended for workers in the commercial market who must receive training per OSHA Standard 1910, 1030, and those who work in:
- Industry and manufacturing
- Fortune 1500 companies
- Occupational health
- Property management
- Hospitality
- Health and fitness
- Child care
- Schools
- Maintenance
- Security
- State corrections facilities
Certification:
- Students receive Participation Certificate upon course completion.
