Black Bear Mentors Hold Scavenger Hunt for Local Children

At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Friday, April 19, a University of Maine graduate student was struck by a university vehicle on Long Road at the University of Maine campus in Orono. The student reports that they are at a local hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services, including the Orono Fire Department, University Volunteer Ambulance Corps, University of Maine Police Department, Orono Police Department and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

The university vehicle involved in the incident was a Chevrolet Express van. It was being operated by a university employee.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392 and the Dean of Students Office can be reached at 207-581-1406.

The scene has been cleared and Long Road is now accessible. An investigation is being conducted by the University of Maine Police Department with assistance from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit. The University of Maine Black Bear Mentors will host elementary- and middle-school students Wednesday Nov. 6 for the group’s annual scavenger hunt on the UMaine campus.

The program is offered through the Bodwell Center for Service and Volunteerism and is run by an AmeriCorps VISTA. More than 80 UMaine students are currently participating, making the program’s 11th year the largest.

Students will arrive at UMaine by bus from their respective schools at 2:30 p.m. and meet their mentors at the Wells Conference Center where they will be given scavenger hunt questions. The students and mentors will travel to buildings on campus to answer the questions before returning to Wells for ice cream sundaes and prizes.

The Black Bear Mentors meet with third- to eighth-grade students once a week after school and work on activities such as sports, arts and crafts, homework, board games and community service projects.

A scavenger hunt also took place Monday, Nov. 4.
