UMaine Hosting Evening of Chemistry for High School Students

Clean water will be the theme of the third annual ChemFest community outreach program Thursday, Oct. 25 at Aubert Hall at the University of Maine. As many as 100 area high school students and their teachers are expected to attend from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. for an evening of creative chemistry demonstrations designed to engage and educate high school students on some fundamental chemical properties. Hosted by the Department of Chemistry’s student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the evening includes dinner and three mini-talks focusing on clean water. Speakers are Cary James, teacher and department chair at Bangor High School, and UMaine graduate students Finley Richmond and Jim Killarney. The event is part of the university’s celebration of National Chemistry Week.
