The April 9 Maine Sunday Telegram included a feature story about Sea and Reef Aquaculture, developed by Soren Hansen — now the company’s president — when he was a doctoral student in UMaine’s School of Marine Science. Headquartered at UMaine’s Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research in Franklin, the successful business raises tropical fish for wholesalers and retailers nationwide. The story notes that Prof. Dave Townsend encouraged Hansen and his business partner who helped him get the company started, Chad Callan. Except for a those raised by a small number of businesses like this one, virtually all the tropical fish sold for aquariums are harvested from coral reefs in the Pacific Ocean.
