International Affairs Association & Model United Nations
The purpose of our organization is to foster an environment for quality discussion on international topics and challenge our members to think critically and gain new perspectives on global issues. Model United Nations Conferences are a great way for our members to put their skills to use, meet people from all over the world, and grow professionally and personally. Our members come from all different majors, from Engineering to English, all having something to gain from the skills and confidence-building offered by Model UN. The experiences our members gain will go on to shape their futures as they complete college and enter their careers.
Furthermore, traveling to different conferences allows us to represent the University of Maine and the state of Maine as a whole on the national and international level. At a lot of these conferences, we meet people who have never met anyone from Maine or even heard of UMaine before. It is an honor to show the world what our university and all of Maine have to offer.
Outside of conferences, we host weekly meetings for our members to practice their skills necessary for Model UN, such as public speaking and resolution writing. We also foster a welcoming and friendly environment within our team by hosting social events around Orono, the most popular being at the Orono Trampoline Park! Our team also has a partnership with the Student Heritage Alliance Council (SHAC) to bring together student organizations with similar perspectives on international cooperation and diversity. As an organization, we have a strong presence on the UMaine campus!
