Reporting of Criminal Actions or Emergencies

The University of Maine Police Department is the unit or department responsible for law enforcement, security, and emergency police response at the University of Maine’s Orono campus. The UMaine Police Department is located at 81 Rangeley Road on the campus in Orono. Officers of the University of Maine Police Department are ready to respond to calls for service on a twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week (24/7) basis. UMaine PD is staffed with trained,  Maine Criminal Justice Academy certified law enforcement officers, like any other police agency in the State.

To report a crime or emergency on the University of Maine campus you may call the UMaine Police Department by dialing 9-1-1 for emergencies from campus telephones. For non-emergencies call 581-4040 or 3-1-1 on campus. (Note: VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) telephones will NOT provide Enhanced 911 information (Name, location and phone number) if you dial 9-1-1. Dialing 9-1-1 on a VoIP phone will generally NOT connect you to an E911 center or a place that can get help to you.)

The University of Maine has no written policy in regards to confidential reporting that allow the victim or witness to remain anonymous. However, if you wish to have a crime included in the annual disclosure of crime statistics and want to remain confidential, this may be done by reporting this incident to any Campus Security Authority. A Campus Security Authority is any individual or individuals who have responsibility for campus security but who do not constitute a campus police department or campus security department. These are officials of the University who have significant responsibility for student and campus activities, including, but not limited to, student housing, student discipline, and campus judicial proceedings. If such an official is a pastoral or professional counselor, the official is not considered a campus security authority when acting in that capacity.  You may also report any crime to be included in this report anonymously via Campus Eyes at

A number of very well-marked and conveniently located emergency telephones (Blue Light phone) are installed throughout the campus, both indoors and out. These telephones ring directly into the University Police Department when the red button is pushed. You may use the telephones to report a criminal incident, a fire, or other type of emergency or to request assistance of any kind from the UMaine Police Department.

Free on-campus telephones are located at the entrance of each residence hall. Phones are also available in many of the buildings throughout campus that can be used for emergencies.

The UMaine Police Department maintains telephone, radio, and computerized data links with the surrounding police agencies. The local area agencies are the Old Town Police Department, the Orono Police Department, the Maine State Police, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department, and the Bangor Police Department. Contact by both phone and radio is maintained with the Orono Fire Department. The Town of Orono provides Fire Department response to the University of Maine’s Orono campus. The University Volunteer Ambulance Corps provides ambulance service to the campus during the school year and the Orono Fire Department provides this service during the summer months and break periods.

UMaine PD’s emergency and business telephone numbers (9-1-1 and 581-4040) are prominently featured in the campus telephone directory, the Bangor-area telephone directory white pages, and on all of UMaine PD’s publications.
