Mr. William D. Johnson ’56

Bill Johnson (1956 B.A. Business & Economics) retired in 1992 from Mobil Oil Corp. after 36 yrs. of service in marketing/management positions.  As an undergraduate, Bill was a class officer, two-sport letter recipient and a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.  Following graduation he was actively involved in his alma mater serving 12 years as a member of the Alumni Association and as president. He later chaired the 1991-1996 University of Maine National Capital Campaign, was recipient of the Pine Tree Emblem Award in 1987, President’s Development Council, Senior Skull Society, “M” Club member, recipient of the Cumberland County Chapter 2003 Outstanding Alumni Award, Charles F. Allen Society member and continues serving as President of the Class of 1956.  Bill served two five-year terms as a Trustee for the University of Maine System and is an Honorary Trustee for the University of Maine Foundation. Bill has been an elected public official in Massachusetts and Maine for 24 years, his last being Mayor of the City of Saco three terms and honored with the title Mayor Emeritus. He is a past member of the Maine Bar of Legal Overseers, is a Thornton Academy Trustee, a board member of New England Rehabilitation Hospital, and a Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow. His spouse, Mary Atkinson Johnson, is also a U Maine ’55 graduate. Two sons David M. Johnson ’79 and Dale E. Johnson ’83 are both alumni.
