Maine Paid Personal Leave
Maine’s new Earned Paid Leave Law (MEPL)* went into effect January 1, 2021. It is directly applicable to all University temporary employees who do not already receive regular sick and vacation time. Even student employees may be eligible and will receive paid Personal Leave time if/when they do not meet the minimum enrollment or other requirements stated below.
Who is eligible/ineligible?
- A student employee is always eligible if/when they work 30 or more hours per week
- A student employee is ineligible when they are enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours during academic term and 3 credit hours during summer term)
- If not enrolled at least half-time during the summer term, they may still be ineligible if they were enrolled full-time (12+ credit hours) in the spring term immediately preceding AND they are reasonably expected to be enrolled full-time in the upcoming fall term.
- They may also be ineligible if graduating or working on a thesis or dissertation
