Research can be an important part of an academic career, even for undergraduates. Students can begin this process in SOC 390, Research Methods in Sociology, and take it all the way to the American Sociological Association’s annual meeting. There are organizations to help with this process and the department has funds to help with some of the expenses. We encourage all students to talk with their advisor to see whether to participate in research while at UMaine.

In 2019, the SOC 499 Capstone class did an alumni survey and created a poster for the UMaine Student Symposium. Students took shifts to be with their poster all day answering questions of the many observers who came to the event.
