Early College

Wednesday, March 6, 2019 from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m., Bangor Room

A growing body of research in education suggests that high school students who have the chance to enroll in early college courses during high school are more likely to graduate, be admitted to college, and follow through and earn a college degree.  In the State of Maine, early college opportunities are important to degree attainment and to lowering student debt.

The University of Maine, through its Division of Lifelong Learning, is committed to providing high school students with opportunities to earn college credits, and to experience the value of a UM education.

At this Faculty Forum, Provost Hecker will present the University of Maine System’s vision to increase early college participation in the State of Maine, as well as UMaine’s commitment to this effort.

Associate Provost Monique LaRocque, and Assistant Dean Patty Libby, from the Division of Lifelong Learning, will discuss current efforts underway at UMaine, and plans for increasing participation to meet the university’s goals in supporting high school students.  Participants will also hear from faculty members who teach courses to early college students and their experience with this important student population.

All UMaine community members are encouraged to attend. For those unable to attend, a video of the Forum and an opportunity to provide feedback will be available through this webpage after the Forum.
