PBK Names 2020-21 Inductees
The Delta of Maine Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa honorary society is pleased to announce its inductees for the 2020-21 academic year. This year’s 21 invitees join the oldest academic honor society in the United States, whose membership has included 17 U.S. Presidents, 42 Supreme Court Justices, and more than 150 Nobel Laureates.
Since 1776, Phi Beta Kappa has celebrated excellence in the liberal arts and sciences and championed freedom of thought. Membership is invitation-only and contingent upon fulfillment of requirements covering breadth, depth, and academic success in the study of the liberal arts and sciences.
Delta of Maine Chapter President Tim Cole, associate dean of the UMaine College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was joined by current PBK members to conduct the 2021 induction ceremony in virtual format, viewable below.

Represented by a signature gold key and three Greek letters, Phi Beta Kappa offers a credential that has national recognition. Membership affirms the PBK motto “Love of learning is the guide of life,” derived from the Greek Φιλοσοφία Βίου Κυβερνήτης (ΦΒΚ).
The Delta of Maine chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, a national scholastic honor society, received its charter at the University of Maine in Orono in 1922. The purpose of the honorary society is to recognize and encourage scholarship, friendship, and cultural interests.
