About

Summary:

Maine’s forests are not just natural resources; they are a cornerstone of the state’s identity, economy, and environment. Covering 89% of the state, these forests are essential for maintaining biodiversity, providing ecosystem services, and supporting a range of economic activities, from traditional forestry to tourism. However, Maine’s forest-based economy and rural communities face unprecedented challenges due to climate change, economic transitions, and socio-demographic shifts. At the same time, these challenges present unique opportunities to transform Maine’s forest sector into a resilient, technology-driven, and sustainable engine of growth.

Maine-FOREST (Forest-based Opportunities for Resilient Economy, Sustainability, and Technology) was conceived as a comprehensive initiative to address these challenges head-on by leveraging Maine’s unique strengths and assets. The project brings together diverse stakeholders—including educational institutions, industry partners, non-profits, government agencies, and local communities—to foster innovation, enhance resilience, and build a sustainable future for Maine’s forests and rural populations. The initiative aligns with Maine’s Science & Technology Plan and the state’s Climate Action Plan, which highlight the need for strategic investments in R&D, workforce development, and community resilience. Maine-FOREST represents a significant opportunity to integrate advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and bioproducts, with community-based approaches to resilience and development. By doing so, it seeks to create a convergent research and innovation ecosystem that is responsive to local needs and poised to drive statewide economic, environmental, and social benefits.
