Emma Markowitz — Video Transcript

Hello. My name is Emma Markowitz, and I’m a current sophomore at Harvard College studying regenerative biology. During high school, I had the opportunity to attend four junior science and humanities conferences, two at the regional level, and then two at the national level. The JSHS conferences were really my first time diving into the process of writing a full scientific research paper and presenting my findings on the stage front of a group of professionals. These experiences weren’t just about psic science. They really helped open doors for me, connecting me to so many talented individuals who really shared this curiosity and passion for science. They also introduced me to these new ideas and perspectives which really inspired me to continue to explore research in college. Preparing for these conferences also helped me to hone in on my public speaking skills. I really learned how to communicate these complex ideas to an audience in a way that was both engaging and understandable, as well as how to handle questions thoughtfully and with confidence. So being a part of JSHS was an experience that I think really shaped not only my growth as a researcher, but as a communicator. I’m also incredibly grateful to have received generous awards that are helping to support my college education. So I really highly recommend becoming involved with JSHS. I think it’s been this incredible experience for me that’s not based on solely research, but it’s really just about building connections, confidence, and opening doors that can help make an impact on the future.
