Sylvia Brownlow– Video transcript

Hello. My name is Sylvia Brownlow. And I am from northern Vermont, the Derby area, but I went to Lake Region Union High School, and I’m currently a mechanical engineering major at Northeastern at their Boston campus. And being in JSHS was so amazing and getting to participate. And I placed fourth, which meant that I got to go to the national competition in New Mexico and be a part of all of the posters and then also go watch all the presentations. And it was so amazing to be with our little Northern New England group because we got so close with each other and we just hung out all the time. And it was so amazing to be in such a welcoming community where everybody loved STEM and cared about STEM and just wanted to talk about STEM because my school that I came from Lake Region isn’t super big and there’s not a lot of kids who are interested in that kind of thing. I think there was one other girl who competed in any science fairs at all in my school with me last year. So that was really eye opening to be able to be in one place with so many kids from all over the country where everyone just had a passion for science, technology, engineering, math, like, all of it. And just to see all those groups come together. It was really, really life changing, and it also helped me in planning for my future and what I wanted to do, what college I wanted to go with. And then also in terms of what I wanted to do with my future after college and my career and being able to be at the symposium and go to all of the conferences and little outbreak meetings where people gave you information. That’s not something that my school was particularly good about. So that was also really fun and really cool. And I hope that everybody wants to do JSHS because it was really life changing for me being from a small area, a small rural area to see so many people with a love of science and a love of STEM. So please do JSHS.
