Major or Minor in Jazz Studies

In addition to the Music Education and Music Performance degrees, the University of Maine offers two jazz-specific degrees:

Bachelor of Arts in Music with Concentration in Jazz Studies

The Jazz Studies concentration in the BA Music degree allows students to pursue the specific study of jazz as their major (or double major). In addition to applied lessons on their instrument and ensemble participation, this degree includes courses in music theory and ear training, and advanced courses in jazz theory, jazz history, jazz piano, arranging, and improvisation. As a Bachelor of Arts degree, it is substantial enough to prepare students for graduate studies in jazz and professional performing opportunities, but it leaves room for students to double major, or minor, in another area as well.

Minor in Jazz Studies

The Minor in Jazz Studies includes a foundation in music theory and two advanced jazz theory courses, along with ensemble participation and several elective options. This degree is ideal for students who are majoring in music education or performance, as well as those who are majoring in a different field but want to continue to perform and study jazz.
