Economic Contribution of Maine’s Aquaculture Industry

Project Description

This project examined the economic contribution of Maine’s aquaculture industry. The analysis was based on data collected from a survey conducted by the University of Maine Aquaculture Research Institute, Maine Aquaculture Association, and Maine Aquaculture Innovation Center. Data from the survey along with an economic impact model for the state of Maine were used to estimate the aquaculture industry’s economic contribution.

Results and Accomplishments

This project has no new results to report in 2017-2018, but has continued analysis work and expects to report final results in Year 5.

Results of the 2015-2016 analysis show the aquaculture industry is characterized by mostly small (e.g., fewer than five workers) and start-up operations with a few large producers, and the top three species—in terms of 2014 sales—are Atlantic salmon, mussels and oysters. Overall, the Maine aquaculture sector generates a statewide annual economic contribution, including multiplier effects, of an estimated $137.6 million in output (i.e., sales revenue), 1,078 full- and part-time jobs, and $56.1 million in labor income.
