Robert Morefield

Robert Morefield is focused on investigating the reproductive biology and ecology of ‘salmon lice’ (Lepeophtherius salmonis), a major parasitic pest of salmon aquaculture. Through understanding the behavioral and biochemical strategies the louse employs for infestation, he looks to reveal new eco-friendly tactics for mitigation. Specifically, Robert has reported on the use of pheromonal cues by larval lice to locate a mate bearing host and has studied the use of semiochemical dispersal technologies for disrupting infestations of this perennial pest. Ultimately, the work hopes to direct strategies for development of a novel means to combat the salmon lice problem through sustainable and effective means. Previously, Robert worked on sailing and research ships in the Gulf of Mexico before moving to Maine. While continuing to work on ships, he obtained his AAS degree in Marine Science from Southern Maine Community College, before getting his BS in Biology from the University of Maine. He lives in an old house in the woods with his lovely wife Rose and palindromic child (Anna). Since putting his former life as the strong man in a circus behind him, he has come to appreciate the joys of being a quiet man who enjoys puzzles and the effervescent scent of bar-b-q on a warm summer eve.
