Forest regeneration of ash
Regeneration is a crucial part of ensuring that sustainable sources of brown ash exist on the landscape for Wabanaki use and ecosystem health. In order to keep ash on the landscape in the face of EAB, brown ash seed will need to be grown in nurseries or backyards and introduced into Northeastern forests to make sure there are continued cohorts of brown ash.
Currently, UMaine graduate student Tyler Everett is conducting research about how to create and support new cohorts of ash to replace dead overstory ash. His results, which will recommend strategies for promoting natural regeneration in a forest environment, are forthcoming.
