The Barrick lab aims to understand how mechanosensitive proteins sense and respond to mechanical force to perform essential cellular functions and how defects in these mechanotransduction mechanisms contribute to disease. We use biochemical, biophysical, and cell biological techniques to understand the molecular and cellular basis of cardiac mechanotransduction. Proteins within the heart function in an environment of constantly fluctuating force. Our multiscale, interdisciplinary approach allows us to gain unprecedented insight into how force-dependent changes in protein conformation mediate force transduction in the heart.
