Series 10 #4
Artist: Stephen Porter, Maine
Garden, southwest corner of Memorial Gym, Long Road
Created of stainless steel, this elegant, fluid piece — in the artist’s words — explores the “pure language of geometrics.” The sculpture, one of two works chosen as a Percent for Art project when the university’s Field House was renovated 2013-14, suggests movement, an appropriate theme for a sports facility. The building, now known as the New Balance Field House, housed its first track and field meet in 1926. Porter’s sculpture is located in one of the university’s many small, carefully landscaped spaces and positioned where the light highlights the steel differently as the day progresses. Porter creates with a variety of materials, and has his work in both public and private collections around the country.
