Stand of Elms Sculpture
Maine artist Shoshanna White is the creator of the glass cube sculpture in front of Aubert Hall. Installed in 2011 as part of the state’s Percent for Art Program, the sculpture honors the American elm, a species once prevalent on the Mall (and all over North America), but ultimately decimated by Dutch elm disease. The late UMaine professor Richard Campana helped create and administer a vaccine that saved many elms, including over 300 in Castine, Maine. White’s creative photographic work showcases Castine’s elms and highlights the beauty of this species.
