Grove of Norway Spruce
Between Alumni Hall and Fogler Library is a grove of primarily Norway spruce, a species found throughout the campus and the state. A native of Europe, the Norway spruce is a common ornamental tree, as well as one planted in forest plantations. UMaine has made a concerted effort to weave together trees, gardens and green spaces with buildings, an effort that led to the campus being designated the University of Maine Campus Arboretum in 2002. Calling attention to the natural environment in this way is intended to promote learning about and enjoyment of the beauty of the campus.
