Let’s make your University of Maine identity official by setting up your Mobile MaineCard.
As a mobile-first university, UMaine issues digital IDs to all incoming students instead of physical cards.

Your Mobile MaineCard offers enhanced security and a streamlined, contact-less experience — making move-in and campus life easier than ever.

Before You Start Setup

Make sure you have completed the following before attempting to set up your Mobile MaineCard:

1. Download the Duo Mobile app.

Duo Mobile is the multi-factor authentication app
that you will use to secure your UMS accounts.

Don’t try to setup Duo, that’s the next step!

2. Enroll in Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

With your phone, navigate to MFA Manager. Sign in and click the green
“Enroll Smart Device”. Follow the prompts to set up Duo.

If you get a message saying you are ineligible, please contact IT Support.

3. Download the Transact eAccounts app.

Transact eAccounts is the app where you will download your Mobile MaineCard. Select the appropriate app for your device below:

4. Register with Transact eAccounts

Once Transact eAccounts is installed, register in the app.

Organization = University of Maine System Portal = UM
Then sign in with your UMS credentials.

5. Add your Mobile Mainecard to your wallet

Once signed in, tap the button that says “Add to Wallet“.

Receiving an error message? View our most common Mobile MaineCard issues and resolutions:

You must submit your photo and receive approval before downloading your MaineCard.

If you recently submitted your photo, please allow 48–72 hours for processing.

Note: Photo submission staff members approve photos during regular business hours only.

This usually happens when Transact eAccounts is set up through the wrong portal by mistake.

Delete the app and re-register with the following settings:
Organization = University of Maine System
Portal = UM

If you have registered correctly, please contact the MaineCard Office and they can adjust this for you.

This error is most often caused by an outdated phone operating system.

Please install the latest OS update and accept any Apple, Google, or Samsung Wallet terms and conditions.

6. Your Mobile Mainecard is ready to use!

Once added, you are ready to use your Mobile MaineCard to access your room, purchase food, attend athletic events, borrow library materials, and so much more!

General Mobile MaineCard FAQ’s

The Mobile MaineCard is the official ID of the University of Maine.

You will need an Apple iPhone or watch, an Android Smartphone, and a Duo Mobile compatible operating system (see below).

NFC (Near Field Communication)
All phones must have Near Field Communication (NFC) set up To check if you have NFC capabilities on your phone, go to “Settings” and search for “NFC”. If no results are found, your phone will not be compatible for a Mobile MaineCard.

New device? New MaineCard! Your mobile credential will not automatically transfer to your new phone. Follow the steps below to transfer your mobile credential:

1. Delete your MaineCard from your old phone.
Open Apple Wallet or Google Pay → remove your MaineCard.
Don’t have the old phone? Contact us and we can retire your old credential.

2. Download Transact eAccounts app on your new phone.
Install Transact eAccounts → sign in with your UMaine login.
Select “University of Maine” and “UM” for portal when registering.

3. Add the card to your digital wallet.
Open eAccounts → tap Add to Apple Wallet / Google Pay / Samsung Wallet button.

All incoming students are eligible. This service prevents lost or stolen cards and provides a higher level of security. With a tap, you’re able to access services across UMaine and in the community.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) FAQ’s

A security technology requiring multiple methods of authentication. It protects your digital identity and is highly effective. It’s also easy to use! More information on MFA can be found within the UMS:IT KnowledgeBase

Duo Mobile is a two-factor authentication mobile app for smartphones that helps users log on to other apps with more security. With Duo Mobile, it will use push notifications to the authorized user to confirm their identity when they log into applications that require authentication (eg., University of Maine email, MaineStreet).

If you unenroll in MFA (Duo Mobile), you will no longer be eligible to hold a Mobile MaineCard.

When you opt out of MFA, you will also have your Mobile MaineCard revoked.

Yes, MFA is required to hold a Mobile MaineCard. If your phone is not compatible with Duo Mobile, please visit the MaineCard Office.

In the event that you break or lose your device or you delete the Duo Mobile app, you will be able to access your UMS accounts without having to call the IT Help Desk (check hours of availability).

We strongly recommend creating your own backup codes so you will never find yourself locked out of your UMS accounts.

If you are locked out during daytime hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), please call Tech Services at 207-581-4371 or email aux.support@maine.edu.

If you are unable to find someone, please contact the University of Maine Police Department at 207.581.4040 and they can assist you with your locked door.

Simply open your digital wallet on your smartphone and then select your Mobile MaineCard. This will pull up your Mobile MaineCard directly and allow you to show it to off-campus merchants or the bus service.

We strongly recommend that you set up bypass codes when setting up your Mobile MaineCard. If you have created and saved these codes, you can utilize your codes to access your UMS accounts. Learn how to create bypass codes at IT’s Knowledge Base.

If you did not create backup codes, you must obtain a bypass code from an IT representative. This can most easily be accomplished by calling 1.800.696.4357, or emailing help@maine.edu.
