Checklist for New Commuters and Non-Traditional Students

NEW COMMUTER & NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENTS’ CHECKLIST

□ Attend  Summer 2019 Orientation in June  Ground Floor Memorial Union,  Be sure to attend  the afternoon session for Commuters / Non traditional Students and your college academic session. Non traditional students with family commitments and time restraints do not need to stay over night or return for Day Two of your college’s session.

July & August  (If you missed Summer Orientation) Take a summer Orientation tour. Register for a tour at https://go.umaine.edu/visit/campus-tour/. Tell your guide you’re a non-traditional student  and/or commuter and ask to include a visit to the Commuter Lounge in the Memorial Union.

□ Pay the confirmation deposit 

□ Register for classes with your college

□ MaineCard: You can have your MaineCard photo taken at the Info Fair in the CCA each afternoon  except Friday of June Orientation week. You can pick up your MaineCard at the MaineCard office in 1st floor Memorial Union, after 24 hours.  Or stop by the MaineCard Office any week day over the summer to have your photo taken.

To get your MaineCard BE SURE TO BRING:
1. Your MaineStreet ID number*
2. Another photo ID (such as a current state driver’s license or high school ID)*Information regarding your MaineStreet ID was included in your acceptance letter. If you do not have this information, contact the IT Help Center at 207.581.2506 or visit: IT Help Center.

Maine Card is used for:

Library card, Student Rec. Center pass,
To print or make copies at the library and computer clusters (every student gets $16 of printing)
Free Community Connection & Orono Express bus pass,
Free access to ticketed athletic events
Deposit Black Bear Bucks to use at the Bears Den, Book store and more

□ Text Books
Use Text Book reservation services or stop by the Bookstore the week before classes to avoid the Bookstore rush. Reserved text books will be available to new commuters on New Student – Commuter Welcome day or you can purchase them that day as well.

□ UMaine Parking Permit
Commuter Parking passes are $50.00 /year and can be purchased on-line  Be aware that commuters have designated parking areas and will be ticketed for parking in other than Commuter parking spaces. Call 207 581 INFO (updated several times /day) for parking space information.

□ Financial Responsibility Statement (FRS) all students must complete the FRS before enrolling in classes at any campus of the University of Maine system. The FRS may be accepted by going to your MaineStreet Student Center and clicking on the Financial Responsibility Statement link in the “To Do List.”

□ Immunizations:  Its best to send immunization records in before you attend Summer Orientation.

Submitting your documentation is mandatory! The University MUST receive your immunization records by August 31 of this year, or you will not be able to complete your registration for classes. Compliance is mandatory.

□  Attend the New Student Commuter Welcome Day.  Thursday August 29, 2019. for ALL new students living off campus  including recent high school graduates; first years & transfers,  and new nontraditional students; first years & transfers,  Meet other commuters including returning nontraditional students and get your last minute questions answered.

□ Activate your MaineStreet portal and maine.edu account

Students accepted to UMaine should plan to regularly check their university email and MaineStreet portal. This is how you will receive important information from Admissions, Financial Aid and other campus offices. You can find steps on how to activate your accounts on the Portal website. https://umaine.edu/portal/
*Information regarding your UMS Accounts and MaineStreet ID was included in your acceptance letter. If you do not have this information, contact the IT Help Center at 207.581.2506 or visit: IT Help Center.

Be sure to update your personal information on Main Street: for example: your local address and phone number

□ Emergency Warning System
Be sure to sign up for these  cell phone and /or  email alerts You can also opt into the notices about class closing for snow days  http://www.umaine.edu/umainetxt/.  You can also call 207 581 SNOW for cancellation info.

IF YOU’RE NEW TO THE AREA

  • Introduce yourself to your neighbors
  • If you are renting check with an insurance agent about renters insurance
  • Check with the town hall about local recycling and trash pick up. Ask about town parking regulations Ask about what about other services available to you as a town residents
  • Visit the town library
  • Confirm your mailing address with your landlord and/ or get a post office box. Check with local Post Office about mail delivery and  what  to do for mail delivery if you are away over breaks.
  • Confirm your new address on Maine Street
  • Register to vote in your new town
  • Subscribe to a local newspaper or town newsletter

WHEN CLASSES START

  • Visit the Commuter Lounge, Wade Center, ground floor Memorial Union
    Pick up your Commuter Club T Shirt and your free Travel Mug.     Meet other commuters. Have a free cup of coffee. Rent a locker. Read the newspaper. Have a bagel on First Friday Bagels. Enjoy a CANS Commuter pancake breakfast and more!
  • Get involved. Choose from more than 200 diverse clubs and organizations. Consider joining Commuter and Non-traditional Students – CANS (Student Gov’t Board) and Nontraditional Student Associations – NSA (student club).
  • Cheer for the Black Bears. Regular season home games are free with your MaineCard. For schedules, rosters and more info, visit goblackbears.com.
  • Spend time on campus beyond scheduled class time! Visit the Fogler Library. Check out the Emera Astronomy Center and attend a free movie. Get students tickets for Collins Center for the Arts (CCA) events.
  • Get moving. Hike, bike and ski on 15 miles of campus trails. Rent a paddle-board,  kayak or canoe from Maine Bound to explore on the Stillwater River. Check out The New Balance Rec. Center as a student you have free access.
  • Know your academic advisor: set up a meeting and introduce yourself before the Thanksgiving break.
