Many basic objects in number theory, such as prime numbers, do not follow any regular patterns. However, they typically obey certain statistical laws – some of which are less obvious than others. I will first discuss some aspects of the distribution of prime numbers, explaining how they behave like random numbers in some ways but not others. Then I will discuss the distribution of other key objects in number theory – elliptic curves and modular forms.
