Plume
By Sarina Martin
Plume is a monoprint of a barn owl, a rare species in Maine. This piece was created to represent nature in a full range of colors. These colors are based on the underlying hues that make up the shadows and light of the feathers beyond the color palette of the animal seen at first glance. Barn owls have faced difficulty maintaining their population due to harsh winter conditions as they have poorly insulated feathers. Irregular winter weather conditions in Maine have caused food insecurity and impaired temperature regulation for barn owls, further threatening the species’ stability. Additionally, the recent shift in agricultural practices has decreased open farm structures for roosting and nesting locations as well as restricted grasslands for prey sources.
