Minor in Philosophy, Ethics and Political Philosophy, and Environmental Ethics

The Department of Philosophy offers three minors: a minor in Philosophy, a minor in Ethics and Political Philosophy, and a minor in Environmental Ethics.

Our minors are open to all undergraduate, degree-seeking University of Maine students.

 

Requirements for the minor in Philosophy:

  • 18 credits or more in Philosophy:
    • PHI 210: History of Ancient Philosophy, PHI 221: Classical Chinese Philosophy, OR PHI 312: History of Modern Philosophy (3 credits)
    • And at least 15 additional elective credits in Philosophy
  • At least 9 credits taken at 200 level or higher
  • At least 9 credits taken at the University of Maine
  • Minimum grade of C- for a course to count towards the minor
  • Minimum GPA in the minor of C (2.0)

 

Requirements for the minor in Ethics and Political Philosophy:

  • 18 credits or more in Philosophy:
    • PHI 100: Contemporary Moral Problems OR PHI 230: Ethics (3 credits)
    • PHI 240: Social and Political Philosophy (3 credits)
    • At least 3 courses from the following list: PHI 100, PHI 102, PHI 104, PHI 105, PHI 210, PHI 223, PHI 230, PHI 232, PHI 235, PHI 236, PHI 240, PHI 242, PHI 286, PHI 287, PHI 312, PHI 317, PHI 342, PHI 344, PHI 345, PHI 346, PHI 432 (9 credits)
    • And at least 3 additional credits in Philosophy
  • At least 9 credits taken at 200 level or higher
  • At least 9 credits taken at the University of Maine
  • Minimum grade of C- for a course to count towards the minor
  • Minimum GPA in the minor of C (2.0)

 

Requirements for the minor in Environmental Ethics:

  • 18 credits or more including the following:
    • 6 credits of Environmental Ethics from these options: PHI 132, PHI 232, PHI 332, PHI 432
      (Courses marked with an asterisk in lists below count toward this requirement first and are not able to be counted toward the additional requirement unless this requirement has been fulfilled.)
    • 3 credits of Ethical Theory from these options: PHI 100, PHI 221, PHI 230, PHI 232*, PHI 235, PHI 240, PHI 244, PHI 344, PHI 345
    • 9 credits of Environmental Studies from these options:
      • Anthropology: ANT 225, ANT 235, ANT 250, ANT 270, ANT 451, ANT 464
      • Biology: BIO 122
      • Civil & Environmental Engineering: CIE 210
      • Communications & Journalism: CMJ 107, CMJ 407
      • Economics: ECO 190, ECO 381
