Individual rights in a democratic society will be explored, as will the legal definitions of various crimes. The law enforcement, judicial, juvenile justice and corrections subsystems will also be explored, and a number of reform proposals presented.

This course will introduce students to the goals, purpose, and history of the corrections system within the United States. Students will learn how the American correctional system became a hallmark for the punishment and management of offenders with one of the highest incarceration rates in the world. Students will also examine current issues that professionals in the field of corrections encounter, such as the management of inmates with mental health needs. Examples of topics covered in this class include the establishment of community corrections, the societal impact of mass imprisonment, and the management of inmates with special needs.

This is a course about doing criminological research. It provides a foundation for advanced research methods courses, capstone research in criminal justice, and engagement with criminal justice research in professional settings. We will focus on key steps in the research process, including identifying puzzles about the social world, selecting research methods to investigate these puzzles in a careful and systematic way, and dialoguing about research discoveries with criminologists and other publics. Additionally, we will read and analyze examples of real-life criminological research to become familiar with conventions of criminological writing and to develop critical understanding of the logic of the research process. Credit cannot be earned for both CRJ 290 and SOC 290
