Career Preparation
The Career Center assists graduate students in planning for professional careers. Services available include individual career counseling, career information for exploring your options, assistance in identifying potential employers, resume and vita critiques, job search workshops, mock interviews using videotape equipment, job listings, employer information, and assistance with establishing, maintaining, and mailing credential files to potential employers. There is no charge to students for these services, except for a minimal postage and handling fee for credential requests.
The Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning offers workshops, teaching resources, etc to help prepare you and your CV for your next job.
Computing Resources
Computer Clusters
There are two primary computer clusters on campus that are open to all students: one on the first floor of Fogler Library and one on the first floor of the Memorial Union. The Graduate Center in Stodder Hall has computers that are available for only graduate students.
IT maintains a Help Center that provides walk-in and telephone technical support for IT services such as software downloads, and disk recovery and anti-virus utilities. Visit their website, call 581-2506, or e-mail ithelp@umit.maine.edu.
Purchasing a Computer
The Campus Bookstore is an on-campus store located on the first floor of the Memorial Union that sells personal computers, peripherals, upgrades, software, and supplies at discounted educational prices. Visit their website or call 581-2580 to learn about their inventory and current deals.
Other Useful Stuff
If you have audio-visual needs, Folger Library can supply a wide range of A/V equipment for use on campus.
The Innovative Media Research and Commercialization Center has equipment for high-end graphic, video, and audio production, including multimedia, web design.
When it comes time to print your posters, Printing Services (um.printing@maine.edu) have large printers for the job, but make an appointment and anticipate a 1-2 day wait for the printing. Here are the UMaine poster templates with official logos, fonts, etc.
Thesis and Dissertation Help
Fogler Library Subject Specialists can help you with any of your information and research needs (e.g., optimizing your literature searching, finding arcane materials, organizing and synthesizing literature, finding places to publish, grant seeking, professional development)! They can meet with you or your research team/department, in person or online. In addition, there are a series of Fogler Library Workshop Series and Recordings on a range of useful topics from Data Management, Writing, Statistical Programs, etc. Check out the Subject Guides at Fogler Library for resources for TONS of different subjects, including:
- Teaching Resources, Methods, Communication, Etc.
- Public Speaking, Conferences Posters, Presentations and Prep
- Race Relations and Communicating Antiracism in the Classroom
- Research Services, Graduate Student Tips and Tricks, Publishing, etc
If you need help with your writing, or staying motivated to write, there are several groups that can help! In particular, check out the Graduate school sponsored writing group and the Writing Center.
If statistics aren’t your thing, there is a statistical consultant at UMaine that can help!
