
From its inception in 1979, the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (MAIS) program offers:
- Guidance in focusing your exploration of knowledge
- The opportunity to integrate work from several disciplines into a program that is academically and personally meaningful
- The solid achievement of a Master of Arts degree
- The possibility of pursuing these studies as either a part-time or full-time student
- The potential for degree completion in a fully online capacity
Self-directed MAIS applicants or those pursuing the Disability Studies concentration must complete the following items for their application:
- Application for graduate degree and application fee
- Primary advisor agreement email from a faculty member at the University of Maine
- Two letters of recommendation
- Official college/university transcripts from all institutions attended
- Draft of Program of Study (POS)
MAIS applicants pursuing the online Maine Studies or online Peace Studies concentrations must complete the following items for their application:
- Application for graduate degree and application fee
- Two letters of recommendation
- Official college/university transcripts from all institutions attended

MAIS Project
The deadline dates for submission of complete applications for the self-designed and Disability Studies concentrations within the MAIS program are:
Fall/Summer Semester: First Monday in April*
Spring Semester: First Monday in November*
*No formal admissions decisions will be made before these deadlines.
The deadline dates for submission of complete applications for the Maine Studies and Peace Studies concentrations within the MAIS program are 6 weeks before the start of the term.
Students must contact the appropriate coordinator prior to submitting an application. On the application, students should indicate to which faculty member they have been in communication.
The concentrations in Maine Studies and Peace Studies are offered 100% online.
