Ph.D. Program in Anthropology & Environmental Policy

Baten, a Bangladeshi national, has a background in forestry and ecosystem governance. Baten is particularly interested in examining policy dimensions of common property resources management. He previously obtained a Master’s degree in Ecosystems, Governance and Globalization from the Stockholm Resilience center, University of Stockholm, where he focused how poorly defined property rights could lead to degradation of Indonesian mangrove commons. He received Bachelor and Master’s degree in forestry from the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh, where his researches pertained to human dimensions of forest resources management.  He is interested in investigating factors that influence water sharing of trans-boundary rivers between neighboring countries. For his graduate research, he plans to extend his research further to other trans-boundary commons such as mangroves, lakes, pastures and developing a model for governing trans-boundary commons from both developed and developing country perspectives.
