Kinesiology & Physical Education (M.Ed., M.S.)
About
NOTE: We are not currently accepting applications for the Kinesiology master’s program at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Our graduate programs in Kinesiology and Physical Education offer a general, science-based curriculum leading to a strong foundation for careers in exercise science, as well as physical education and fitness in K-12 schools or across the lifespan. Students work closely with faculty specialists employing the latest technology to measure and analyze physical response, development and deviation, providing a deep understanding of how to apply the latest practical techniques and theory. Classroom and laboratory experiences are designed to provide the student with an applied understanding of the scientific basis of exercise training in different groups. And as Maine’s only NCAA Division I school, UMaine offers a wealth of hands-on and real world experiences right at your fingertips. Areas of specialization include physical education/teacher education, adapted physical education and exercise science.

Program Delivery
Our graduate programs in Kinesiology and Physical Education are delivered via in-person classes, with several opportunities for hands-on learning in our state-of-the-art facilities on campus and through practical fieldwork in clinical settings and schools throughout Maine. Students work collaboratively with a faculty advisor to choose between a Master of Science (M.S.) or a Master of Education (M.Ed.). The M.S. requires a thesis and a three-credit graduate apprenticeship, while the M.Ed. does not. Both options require a minimum of 30 credits.
Certificates
In addition to our master’s programs, we offer graduate certificates in Kinesiology and Physical Education that allow you to build knowledge and skills in focused areas to better meet your personal and professional goals. If you don’t already have a graduate degree, you can apply the courses from a certificate toward an M.Ed. or M.S. should you choose to continue your studies. Our graduate certificates include:
Advising & Support
The College of Education and Human Development provides students with academic guidance and personal support before they set foot on campus through graduation and beyond. Our graduate students work with faculty advisors, who build genuine relationships and provide timely information to help you navigate your program, your work in schools and communities, and whatever else is on your plate.
Program Learning Outcomes
The University of Maine Graduate School prepares engaged scholars and professionals to make meaningful contributions to their communities of practice: research consortia, clinical practices, studios, workplaces, classrooms, and political collectives. As graduate students are key agents in helping to sustain an environment supportive of learning through teaching, collaborative inquiry, mentoring or demonstration, they are critical ambassadors for public higher education during their coursework and after graduation. During and after graduate training, accordingly, the Graduate School’s doctoral, masters, and professional-certifications degree programs will enable students to:
Careers
A master’s degree in Kinesiology and Physical Education from UMaine prepares students for in-demand careers in health and fitness, coaching, and K-12 physical education teaching and administration. For students interested in the physical education/teacher education specialization, schools and districts around the United States are in need of highly qualified teachers to address shortages and replace educators who retire or leave the profession for other reasons. Many school districts offer increased pay to teachers with a master’s degree. In addition, research has shown that educators with advanced degrees have better job satisfaction and are more likely to stay in the profession as they advance in their careers.
Alumni of our Kinesiology and Physical Education graduate programs have also gone on to careers in:
For students wishing to continue on in graduate school, a master’s degree provides an outstanding foundation for doctoral study in education and related fields.
