Looking for BLS certification near you? UMaine Training & Safety offers a variety of courses geared both towards those who are working in the health care field and those who are not.

Which class is right for me?

We offer four different types of classes: Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers, HeartSaver CPR/AED, Hands Only CPR, and First Aid.

We teach all courses to the standards of the American Heart Association (AHA) or Emergency Care and Safety Institute respectively.

BLS (Basic Life Support) for Healthcare Providers

This course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals with the skills to keep people alive until they can be treated with more advanced lifesaving measures.

Course Cost:

$75.00

Course Length & Examination:

  • Approximately 4 hours
  • A certified American Heart Association BLS instructor helps students practice their skills and tests them

The BLS course covers:

  • Adult and pediatric CPR
  • Two-rescuer scenarios and use of the bag-valve mask
  • Choking relief (conscious and unconscious)
  • Automated external defibrillation
  • Special resuscitation situations

BLS training is designed for current or training healthcare professionals, including:

  • Physicians
  • Nurses
  • Paramedics
  • Emergency medical technicians
  • Respiratory, physical and occupational therapists
  • Physician’s assistants
  • Residents or fellows
  • Medical or nursing students in training
  • Aides, medical or nursing assistants, and other healthcare personnel
  • University of Maine Majors who need CPR certification: Nursing, Athletic Training

Certification:

  • American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Course Completion Card is valid for two (2) years.

Heartsaver® CPR & AED

The HeartSaver® CPR & AED course provides the general population with training in CPR & AED procedures.

Course Cost:

$75.00

Course Length & Examination:

  • Approximately 2-3 hours for CPR & AED
  • A certified American Heart Association BLS instructor helps students practice their skills and tests them

The course covers:

  • Adult, Child and Infant CPR/AED & Choking
  • Overdose emergencies

The HeartSaver® CPR & AED course is intended for all individuals who have a duty to respond to a cardiac emergency due to job responsibilities or regulatory requirements, including:

  • Security and airline personnel
  • Camp counselors
  • Police and Firefighters
  • Teachers and day-care workers
  • Aerobics teachers/physical-fitness trainers
  • University of Maine Majors who need this class: KPE

Certification:

  • American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR AED Course Completion Card that is valid for two (2) years.

HeartSaver® First Aid

The AHA’s HeartSaver First Aid course trains participants to provide first aid in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

Who should take this course?

The AHA’s Heartsaver First Aid Course is designed for anyone with little or no medical training who needs a course completion card for their job, regulatory (e.g., OSHA), or other requirements, or anyone who wants to be prepared for an emergency in any setting.

  • First aid basics
  • Medical emergencies
  • Injury emergencies
  • Environmental emergencies
  • Preventing illness and injury
  • Opioid-associated life-threatening emergencies

Hands Only Cpr

This hands only CPR course covers how to give chest compressions; it is intended for people who are interested in learning the skills but do not need a certificate for an employer or class. This is a less expensive alternative for people who are solely interested in learning how to help people.

Course Cost:

$10

The Hands Only CPR course does not include a certification. To set up a Hands Only CPR class for a group, please email um.umts.uvac@maine.edu.
