Bangor native and University of Maine graduate Sean Campbell has been named the next president and CEO of the University of Maine Foundation. He brings 28 years of experience in higher education advancement.

Campbell, who earned a journalism degree from UMaine in 1994, currently serves as vice president for advancement at Illinois Tech. He previously held leadership roles at Loyola University Chicago, Skidmore College, the University of Chicago and Bates College.

Campbell’s family ties to UMaine span generations. His father and uncles also attended the university.

“UMaine provided an education that completely changed the socio-economic trajectory for my family — as it has for many thousands of families dating back generations,” he said. “Bringing that history and professional experience to leading the Foundation is an exciting opportunity to help ensure this important mission.”

Campbell will begin Oct. 19 and succeed Jeffery Mills, who will retire Aug. 31 after 14 years leading the Foundation. Sarah McPartland-Good, vice president and Foundation general counsel, will serve as interim president and CEO until Campbell begins.

At Illinois Tech, Campbell oversees fundraising and alumni relations. During his first 18 months, his team secured $90 million in new donations and pledges.

“Sean’s professional background and his connections to Maine put him in a position to lead the successes of the Foundation to new levels,” UMaine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy said. “Through the Foundation, our generous donors provide critical support to our students, our capital infrastructure and other initiatives. I look forward to working with him as a new member of my cabinet during this important time as we continue to shape the strategic vision for the UMaine of the future.”

The University of Maine Foundation is an independent nonprofit organization that encourages, receives and stewards private support for UMaine. Its endowment has reached more than $500 million.
