Undergraduate Studies
The University of Maine’s Surveying Engineering Technology (SVT) program equips students with the practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and hands-on experience needed to excel in the surveying profession. Accepted for licensure requirements in all 50 states and beyond, the program combines state-of-the-art techniques in boundary surveying, GPS, GIS, and photogrammetry with a foundation in business and project management. Students benefit from exceptional faculty licensed across multiple states, and unique summer work opportunities with private firms and government agencies nationwide.
Recognized as a multi-year NCEES Surveying Education Award winner, UMaine’s SVT program stands out for its excellence in preparing students for professional success. Graduates have a 98% pass rate on their fundamentals of land surveying exam, often progress to project management roles within two to four years, and achieve licensure shortly after. With a legacy rooted in history—surveying was practiced by U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln—UMaine’s program continues to inspire and train the next generation of leaders in the surveying field.
Graduate Studies
SVT offers a range of graduate opportunities delivered fully online with rolling admissions and no standardized entrance test requirement. The program is built for flexibility and accessibility for working professionals. Undergraduate coursework in surveying and professional experience in surveying is strongly encouraged as a prerequisite.
The Graduate Certificate in Surveying Engineering is a 12 cr. exposure to advanced survey technologies and professional advancement including licensure that can count towards the masters programs. The MS in Engineering Technology (SVT concentration) is a non- thesis 30 cr. traditional surveying focus that helps professionals develop advanced technical expertise needed for leadership roles in solving complex boundary, measurement science, and mapping problems. The Professional Science Master’s (PSM) in Engineering and Business (SVT concentration) is a non-thesis 30 cr. mix of surveying and business graduate courses. The Doctorate of Engineering in Engineering Technology (SVT concentration) is a thesis based 42 cr. program designed to create the next generation of leaders in the surveying profession.
