We are engaged in social-ecological systems science in both Maine and Mexico. Drawing on diverse methods and knowledges to advance understanding of people-ocean connections, we are creating information and tools to help inform innovative marine management strategies. Often, but not always, this research is co-created with fishermen, resource managers, and other community members. Our goal is for our work to both contribute locally and to be relevant to other ocean places worldwide.
In northwest Mexico, Heather’s research in this area has focused on the social-ecological systems associated with the small-scale fisheries of the Gulf of California region. To learn more about the work in Mexico, please see the Field Notes and Publications tabs and the archived website for our collaborative group, MAREA.
In Maine, Heather’s work in this area has focused on coastal communities, including but not limited to fisheries-dependent communities. Recent contributions are featured in the Field Notes and Publications.
