Mathematics (B.A. & B.S.)
About
Mathematicians and those with mathematical inclination are inherently problem solvers. Through course work and individual faculty-student work, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers the mechanism to develop and refine problem solving skills and creative thinking skills that are vitally important for the demands of the job market and society in general.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics enables students to develop the skills in analytical and logical reasoning needed to succeed in todayโs world, where technology is an ever-expanding part of everyday life. We offer opportunities for students to build a strong foundation in core mathematical areas and a number of specializations to prepare our students for fulfilling careers. Our faculty bring their research into the classroom, allowing students to see many of the ways in which mathematics is used in different fields. Beyond our introductory classes, many of our classes are small, allowing for engaging interactions between the faculty and students.
B.A. vs B.S.
The B.A. consists of 43 mathematics credits, and (like all B.A. degrees at UMaine) requires either a minor or a second major. The B.S. requires 56 mathematics credits, but you do not need to have a minor unless you want to.ย As a general rule students who want to double down on mathematics and focus their studies more narrowly will choose the B.S., whereas those who wish to combine the study of mathematics with a broader education will more likely choose the B.A. (Although these are not hard and fast rules, of course). The good news is that you do not have to decide at the beginning; the mathematical content of the first year or two of the two degrees is the same, so you can let your experiences in the first few semesters help you decide.
Program Highlights
Requirements
The B.A. in mathematics consists of 42ย credits, grouped into: core mathematics classes, a probability/statistics requirement, and upper level mathematics electives.ย Like all B.A. programs at the University of Maine, it also requires an outside minor or double major.
A student must receive a grade of at least C in a course in order to receive credit toward meeting the requirements for the major.
The B.S. in mathematics consists of 54 credits, grouped into: core mathematics courses, core elective courses, and upper level elective courses.ย B.S. students do not need to complete a minor or a second major.
