Library & Media Specialist (Graduate Certificate)
About
The Library and Media Specialist graduate certificate is a 100% online program preparing teachers, educational leaders and resource specialists to facilitate and advocate for equitable access to information for all students. Aligning to current standards for school librarianship by the American Library Association and the American Association for School Librarians, this five course (15 credit) program develops the knowledge and skills to manage school library and information services. This program will lead to conditional certification in Maine as a school-based Library and Media Specialist, and can be combined with the three course (9 credit) Advanced Library and Media Specialist graduate certificate to qualify for full certification from the Maine Department of Education.
The collaborative graduate programs in Instructional Technology are housed in the University of Maine College of Education and Human Development with courses taught by faculty at UMaine, the University of Maine at Farmington, and the University of Southern Maine.
Our graduate certificates can be completed as focused, standalone professional learning credentials or as part of a master’s or Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree program.

Advising & SUpport
The College of Education and Human Development provides students with academic guidance and personal support before they set foot on campus through graduation and beyond. Our graduate students work with faculty advisors, who build genuine relationships and provide timely information to help you navigate your program, your work in schools and communities, and whatever else is on your plate.

Schools and districts around the United States are in need of highly qualified library specialists to address shortages and replace educators who retire or leave the profession for other reasons. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for librarians and library-media specialists is more than $64,000, higher than the median yearly wage for all occupations.
For students wishing to continue on in graduate school, the credits earned in the Library and Media Specialist graduate certificate program can be applied toward a master’s or Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree.

Accreditation
By itself this program can lead to conditional Maine state certification as a Library and Media Specialist. It can also be stacked with the Advanced Library and Media Specialist graduate certificate to complete the required 24 credits for Maine certification in Library and Media Specialist (Maine DOE certification 071). In addition, the College of Education and Human Development’s teacher preparation programs are nationally accredited by CAEP, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. CAEP accreditation is a seal of approval that assures quality in educator preparation and that our programs prepare new teachers to know their subjects, their students and have the training that allows them to enter the classroom ready to teach effectively.
