About
Our 100% online graduate programs in Instructional Technology are designed to equip experienced educators with the tools and knowledge needed to create rich, meaningful learning environments utilizing the latest technology and computational thinking skills. Graduates of these programs develop a deep understanding of how to design innovative programming to support diverse educational needs, how to devise strategies that seamlessly integrate technology that inspires and increases learner achievement, and how to understand technology’s impact in our increasingly connected world. In addition to gaining expertise, our students learn to investigate and use new and emerging technologies so they can become leaders in implementing enhanced learning experiences.
The collaborative graduate programs in Instructional Technology are housed in the University of Maine College of Education and Human Development with courses taught by faculty at UMaine, the University of Maine at Farmington, and the University of Southern Maine.
We offer a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in instructional technology, which is designed for those who are already working in K-12 schools or other careers where educational technologies are utilized. Our Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) program is a terminal degree providing a cohesive program of professional development beyond the master’s level for those interested in further honing their skills and knowledge of instructional technology, including gaining experience with research.

Program Delivery
Both the M.Ed. and Ed.S. are offered entirely online through UMaineOnline. The flexible course load and various electives ensure you’re in control of the learning outcomes you need to achieve your goals and how you earn your degree. The master’s requires 33 credits, while the Ed.S. requires an additional 30 credits. Ed.S. students complete a capstone instead of a thesis.
The master’s program includes a set of core courses and electives covering instructional design, technology integration, and best practices for teaching and organizational leadership in the digital age. These classes are supplemented by a suite of electives designed to meet your professional goals and personal interests.
Students in the Ed.S. program take nine additional courses (27 credits), six of which must be Instructional Technology classes, plus the 3-credit capstone course. Candidates must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours in professional education coursework at the 500- and/or 600-level at the University of Maine.

In addition to our master’s and Ed.S. programs, we offer several graduate certificates in instructional technology that allow you to build knowledge and skills in focused areas to better serve the needs of students through educational technology. If you don’t already have a graduate degree you can apply the courses from a certificate toward an M.Ed. or Ed.S. should you choose to continue your studies. Our graduate certificates include:

Schools and districts around the United States are in need of highly qualified teachers to address shortages and replace educators who retire or leave the profession for other reasons. Many school districts offer increased pay to teachers with a master’s degree. Accreditation
Our Instructional Design programs are designed for practicing educators who have already achieved initial teacher certification. Students who earn the M.Ed. in Instructional Technology can apply earned course credit toward Maine Department of Education 680 (Computer Technology) endorsement.
