The online Doctor of Engineering (Eng.D.) in Engineering Technology program is for advanced students who want to become leading experts in their field. Doctorate programs generally fall into two categories: academic (research-oriented) and applied (practicum-based). The University of Maineโ€™s Eng.D. in Engineering Technology combines the two philosophies, where students work in a research area and develop expertise through applied and experiential learning to become successful in their academic or professional careers. This program includes a custom-designed Individualized concentration and a concentration in Surveying Engineering Technology to cultivate specific skills integrated with industry needs.

Requirements

Candidates must meet one of the following three requirements

  • A graduate/masterโ€™s degree in surveying/geomatics, engineering, or engineering technology
  • A bachelorโ€™s degree in surveying/geomatics, engineering, or engineering technology, and a graduate/masterโ€™s degreeย 
  • A graduate/masterโ€™s degree and professional licensure in surveying or engineering

Candidates must also meet all of the following requirements

  • Significant professional experience in surveying/geomatics, engineering, or engineering technology
  • A strong letter of recommendation
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Excellent English language and writing skills

Examination

Comprehensive Examination

Also known as a preliminary exam, theย comprehensive examย determines the candidateโ€™s mastery of graduate coursework and ability to publish in peer-reviewed scholarly journals. Candidates will present a potential manuscript for publication, a research proposal, a professional survey report, or other approved document.

Qualifying (Final) Examination

The qualifying (final) examination is an oral exam in which candidates present a review of their work and defend it in response to questions from the advisory committee. A unanimous approval is required.
