Curriculum, Assessment & Instruction (M.Ed.; Ed.S.)
About
The graduate programs in Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction are designed for elementary, middle and high school teachers, who want to assume more responsibility and larger leadership roles while continuing a career in the classroom. These programs help teachers enhance learning and development of students, while addressing state and federal standards in the areas of curriculum, assessment and instruction. We offer a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree, which can be completed entirely online or through a hybrid of online and on-campus courses. We also offer an Education Specialist (Ed.S.), which is a terminal degree providing a cohesive program of professional development beyond the masterโs level.
NOTE: The CA&I programs are for practicing teachers and/or those with existing teaching licenses. For students who have a bachelorโs degree and wish to become a licensed teacher, UMaine offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program.

Program Delivery
The M.Ed. requires a minimum of 33 credits and can be completed entirely online through UMaineOnline [add link] or through a mix of online and on-campus classes.
The program includes a set of core courses and electives covering contemporary issues and evidence-based practices for curriculum development, assessment and instruction. In addition, masterโs students select an area of specialization. You can choose one of our existing graduate certificates as a specialization or create an individually designed specialization in consultation with an advisor.ย
Students currently enrolled in a masterโs degree program through the Graduate School who wish to pursue an approved graduate certificate program simultaneously must apply for admission to the certificate program before one-half of the required credits are completed. There will be no additional charge for this application once an application has been made to the CA&I M.Ed.
The Ed.S. in Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction is available for students who have completed a masterโs degree in an education field. This terminal degree requires an additional 30 credit hours beyond a masterโs and is individually designed with an advisor. It can also be completed entirely online. Candidates must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours in professional education coursework at the 500- and/or 600-level at the University of Maine. Students in the Ed.S. program are also required to complete a capstone experience, such as an action research project or internship. All work for the Ed.S. must be completed within a six-year period.
Advising & Support
The College of Education and Human Development provides students with academic guidance and personal support before they set foot on campus through graduation and beyond. Our graduate students work with faculty advisors, who build genuine relationships and provide timely information to help you navigate your program, your work in schools and communities, and whatever else is on your plate.
Program Learning Outcomes
The Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction programs are designed to help our graduates meet certain professional standards. Our student learning outcomes (SLOs) are adapted from the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC), a group of state education agencies and national educational organizations dedicated to the preparation, licensing and ongoing professional development of teachers.
Careers
Schools and districts around the United States are in need of highly qualified teachers to address shortages and replace educators who retire or leave the profession for other reasons. Many school districts offer increased pay to teachers with a masterโs degree. In addition, research has shown that educators with advanced degrees have better job satisfaction and are more likely to stay in the profession as they advance in their careers.ย
For students wishing to continue on in graduate school, an M.Ed. Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction provides an outstanding foundation for doctoral study in fields such as education, special education, educational leadership and STEM education.
