Athletic Training (M.S.A.T.)
About
Athletic trainers are certified medical professionals who specialize in the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of emergent, acute or chronic injuries and medical conditions. Our Master of Science in Athletic Training (M.S.A.T.) degree offers students diverse educational opportunities and practical experiences to help them become well-rounded practitioners. Classroom and laboratory experiences are designed to provide students with an applied understanding of the scientific basis for athletic training serving different populations. As Maine’s only NCAA Division I school, UMaine offers a wealth of hands-on and real-world experiences right at students’ fingertips. Our program offers students the opportunity to experience inter-professional education with other students and faculty in health care fields such as exercise science and osteopathic medicine.

NOTE: This page contains information for our traditional two-year MSAT program, which is open to prospective students who already have a bachelor’s degree. For undergraduate students, we also offer an accelerated (3+2) MSAT program.

Program Delivery
Our professional master’s program can be completed in two academic years. For the first year and a half, students take in-person courses at the University of Maine in Orono. During the final semester, coursework is completed online through video conferencing either asynchronously or synchronously. This allows students the opportunity to complete their final, immersive clinical education experience anywhere in the United States, while still finishing their final courses.
Students may opt for either a non-thesis or thesis track for completing their studies.
New cohorts begin during the fall semester each year, allowing you to learn from your peers and professors in a sequential way that integrates best practices of didactic and clinical, hands-on learning in a collaborative environment.
All graduates of the MSAT program are eligible to sit for the BOC Exam for athletic trainers, pending CAATE approval.

The College of Education and Human Development provides students with academic guidance and personal support before they set foot on campus through graduation and beyond. Our graduate students work with faculty advisors, who build genuine relationships and provide timely information to help you navigate your program, your work in schools and communities, and whatever else is on your plate.

Careers
Jobs for college graduates of certified athletic training degree programs are growing much faster than the average for all professions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, median pay for athletic trainers is $60,250 per year and the number of athletic training jobs is expected to grow by 11% over the next decade. Traditionally, athletic trainers are employed in sports medicine settings, where they provide care for individuals participating in all levels of athletics. In addition, the number of athletic trainers is growing in fields such as health care, the military, public safety, performing arts, occupational health and safety, and more, according to national, regional and state employment data.

Accreditation
The Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). All graduates of the MSAT program are eligible to sit for the initial Board of Certification (BOC) Exam for Athletic Trainers, pending CAATE approval. Once they pass the exam, certified athletic trainers are able to easily achieve state licensure wherever they choose to practice.
