In today’s schools, physical education teachers must have the knowledge, skills and practical experiences to meet the needs of all students. The 15-credit graduate certificate in Adapted Physical Education is designed to address these needs by increasing the number and capacity of teachers with credentials in adapted physical education for students with physical and/or intellectual disabilities. The program — designed for practicing teachers — features a series of courses built to enhance the use of age- and developmentally-appropriate, evidence-based practices for physical education classes. For currently certified teachers, this certificate meets the coursework requirements for Maine’s Adapted Physical Education endorsement.
Our graduate certificates can be completed as focused, standalone professional learning credentials or as part of a master’s or Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree program.

Careers
Schools around the United States are in need of highly qualified educators to address shortages and replace teachers who retire or leave the profession for other reasons. In addition to practicing teachers in PK-12 schools, this certificate may be appropriate for people in careers such as adaptive sports instructors, wilderness therapists, athletic administrators and youth program managers.
For students wishing to continue on in graduate school, the credits earned in the Adapted Physical Education graduate certificate program can be applied toward a master’s or Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree.

Accreditation
This certificate does not lead to initial Maine teaching certification, however teachers who are already licensed in Maine can apply the courses in this certificate toward the State of Maine’s requirements for the Adapted Physical Education endorsement (Maine DOE certification 515). Contact Maine DOE for more information about certification and credentialing.
In addition, the College of Education and Human Development’s teacher preparation programs are nationally accredited by CAEP, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. CAEP accreditation is a seal of approval that assures quality in educator preparation and that our programs prepare new teachers to know their subjects, their students and have the training that allows them to enter the classroom ready to teach effectively.
