Friends and colleagues of the late Professor Ann Schonberger are invited to celebrate her life and accomplishments at 2:30 on Saturday, April 9th, Minsky Recital Hall. Light refreshments will be served after the service. A professor of mathematics and scholar in the area of STEM education and gender, Ann served from 1991-2013 as Director of the Women’s Studies (later Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies) and Women in the Curriculum Programs . During those years she built the program from a concentration to a major, added a graduate concentration, and oversaw a lively schedule of public events related to women’s history, women’s achievements, and gender theory. Through state-wide conferences and research exchanges, she fostered connections between feminist scholars and teachers across Maine.
She was also an active community volunteer, working for 35 years as a founding member and devoted supporter of Spruce Run, Maine’s first domestic violence shelter.
For her extensive service to the university and the community, Ann received the Maine Public Broadcasting Jefferson Award for Public Service (1988), the University of Maine Presidential Public Service Award (2001), and election to the Maine Women’s Hall of Fame (2017).
