    • Home to the Living Heritage Society of Van Buren, Village Acadien is on the National Register of Historic Places and has been recognized as a Historical National Landmark.

    • This is the most northern and eastern US Highway system in the United States. Route 1 begins in Fort Kent and travels 2,369 miles south to Key West, Florida. There is a nice monument here overlooking the St. John River.

    • Fascinating museum showcasing Maine’s historical logging industry, with special focus on the difficult conditions faced by lumbermen.
  • B & A Caboose and Green Water Tank 306 US-1, Frenchville, ME 04745
    • These historic landmarks tell the story of the past industrial roots that spread deep throughout this region of Aroostook County.
  • Bible Point Island Falls, ME 04747
    • Island Falls was one of Theodore Roosevelt’s favorite places to visit! At Bible Point there is a plaque in honor of Theodore Roosevelt in the place where he would often go to read his Bible.

    • Historical society with collections from the surrounding town of Central Aroostook County. Not currently open to the public, but planning to open in the future at this location.
  • Churchill Depot History Center 46°29’32.7″N 69°17’14.6″W
    • Once the headquarters of the Madawaska Company’s lumber operations, this site is now maintained by the state as a museum of the old lumber industry!
  • Eagle Lake Locomotives 46°19’20.1″N 69°22’30.7″W
    • Another relic of the old lumber industry, these “ghost trains” are an exciting find for adventurers passing through the Woods!
  • Fort Kent Blockhouse Blockhouse Rd, Fort Kent, ME 04743 | (207) 941-4014
    • Serves as a museum and is maintained by local Eagle Scouts. It is the only fortification relating to the “Bloodless” Aroostook War of 1839-1839 and the border dispute between Great Britain and the United States.
  • Frenchville Historical Society and Wylie House 309 US-1, Frenchville, ME 04745
    • Alongside the Caboose and Green Water Tank stands the Station House for the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad. Visit the Frenchville Historical Society of the store of this historical landmark and many more.
  • Governor Brann Schoolhouse US-1, Cyr Plantation, Maine 04785
    • This historic schoolhouse is on the National Register of Historic Places. Be sure to stop here on the way to the amazing Acadian Village in Van Buren!

    • One of the most historical agricultural sites in New Sweden.  This historic district was once home to a prominent potato farming family, the Larssons.

    • Museum curated by a local woodsman with a large collection of chainsaws from the past century. “The museum doesn’t have set hours, but Pelletier is almost always around to greet visitors during the day.”

    • “Maine’s Franco-American heritage dates back to early French explorers, Acadian settlers and French missionaries.” Go back in time to see life in an Acadian village!
  • Maine Emblem Moose Statue Dufour Dr, Van Buren, ME 04785
    • You won’t want to miss this life-sized bronze statue of Maine’s most famous mammal. A great stop for a Maine-themed photo opportunity!
  • Martin Acadian Homestead and Learning Center 137 St. Catherine St, Madawaska, ME 04756
    • This nonprofit corporation is dedicated to preserving and sharing historical information and activities of the region. The Martin Acadian Homestead was built in 1860, added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 2009, and was incorporated as the Martin Acadian Homestead and Learning Center in 2019.

    • This historical cultural museum boasts an impressive collection of religious artifacts and vestments, sculptures, folk art, Acadian and Québecois pine furniture and artifacts from as early as the 18th century.

    • If you’re interested in learning more about Aroostook County’s fauna, be sure to visit this museum. Because of their long history (founded in 1939), they have been able to expand their collection greatly.
  • Oakfield Railway Museum 40 Station St, Oakfield, ME 04763
    • Located in the old Oakfield Station building, which is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places, this museum preserves the history of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad which once passed through Oakfield!
  • Patten Lumbermen’s Museum 61 Shin Pond Rd, Patten, ME 04765 | (207) 528-2650
    • Just across the town line in Patten, this fabulous museum houses a large collection of artifacts from the old logging industry. A great museum preserving an important piece of Maine history!

    • This schoolhouse was in use as recently as 1951 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

    • One of the oldest churches in the St. John Valley and the state of Maine.

    • Visit this impressive museum that showcases the remarkable history of the once-booming Stockholm, where the lumber industry was king. Visiting is free to the public and provides an interesting window into the lives of the Swedish settlers who were the first Europeans to settle in this area.
  • Swedish Colony Westmanland, ME 04783
    • Maine’s historic Swedish Colony once covered much of what is now Westmanland and neighboring New SwedenPerham, Stockholm, and Woodland, and many related sites remain in Westmanland today. Have an adventure seeing how many sites you can find along the way!
  • Tante Blanche Museum 774B Main St, Madawaska, ME 04756
    • 1970s log building named after Marguerite Blanche Thibodeau Cyr in honor of her heroic deeds during the 1797 famine. This is where you can learn more about the history and heritage of the town’s settlers. It is maintained by the Madawaska Historical Society.
  • The Capitol School Museum and Gift Shop 116 Station Rd, New Sweden, ME 04762 | (207) 896-3052
    • One of the last one-room schoolhouses built in New Sweden. The school served as a place of voting and housed the local Grange after it was closed in 1950.
  • The Caribou Historic Society 1051 Presque Isle Rd, Caribou, ME 04736
    • “Preserves the local history of this area of Aroostook County. Explore the collection of letters, old photographs, and other historic artifacts that chronicle Caribou’s role in the Aroostook War, importance as a potato farming region, and site of the Loring Air Force Base.”
  • The Gustaf Adolph Evangelical Lutheran Church 40 Capitol Hill Rd, New Sweden, ME 04762 | (207) 896-3437
    • Organized in 1871, this historic building is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • The Jail House 47 Burleigh St, Island Falls, ME 04747
    • With only two total iron celled jails in the state, this historic landmark is truly one of a kind!
  • The James School 125 Niles Road, Presque Isle, ME 04769
    • This one-room schoolhouse was built in 1917 and used until 1948. It is now a museum, with much of the original tin wall covering, school desks, instruction books, and bell still in place. The school is now also used as a picnic area, meeting place, and for weddings, family gatherings, and educational activities.

  • White Memorial Building 109 Main St, Houlton, ME 04730
    • The Aroostook County Historic and Art Museum home was built in 1903. The original house at the site burned in 1902 and was rebuilt on same foundation. The last owner was Stella White who deeded it to the Town to be used as a museum. It was used as the Red Cross Headquarters during WWII. The building was designated as a national Historic Building in 1975.

    • Historic estate of the Black family, open for public touring; a variety of programs and events are happening as well!  The gardens and trails are also wonderful for a lovely stroll.

DownEast Maine

    • Learn about local history in the area around Eastport. There is the Fort Sullivan Barracks Museum, Quoddy Craft Shop, Quoddy Dam model, and a research room.
  • Brick School House  Maine State Rte 179, Aurora, ME 04408
    • Built in 1827 and made of brick, this is the oldest public brick building that is in Hancock county. It was put on the national register of historic places in 1980!

    • Historical society dedicated to preserving the stories, antiques, and photos of the past in the Brooklin area.
  • Burnham Tavern Museum 14 Colonial Way, Machias, ME 04654 | (207) 733-4577
    • “In recognition of its importance, the Burnham Tavern has been designated as a National Historic Site by the U.S. Department of the Interior, and in 1974 the Tavern was selected as one of the 21 homes in the United States with the most significance to the American Revolution, the only one so recognized in the State of Maine.”
  • Calais Observatory Lincoln & North St, Calais, ME 04619 
    • All that is left of this observatory now is two large stones, but it was once the Coast and Geodetic Survey’s Calais Observatory and was last officially used back in 1895. It helped to define Greenwich, England as the zero point for the worldwide longitude values, which is the ultimate reference point for the planet. Today you can still go and visit the stones and see the NOAA plaque commemorating its historic significance. It is known by the New England Historical Society as the Six New England Places to Gaze at the Stars.

    • Given how far back Castine’s history goes, a central hub dedicated to preserving and celebrating that past is an essential stop for anyone who loves history! A wide variety of exhibits that show off Castine’s rich history give something interesting for everyone who visits!
  • Deer Isle Granite Museum 51 Main St, Stonington, ME 04681 | (207) 367-5008
    • “The museum’s exhibits celebrate the skill and bravery of Stonington’s quarrymen, as well as the fascinating history of the Deer Isle granite industry. The quarriers’ risky work cut the distinctive pink granite used in such 20th-century monuments as New York’s Rockefeller Center, approaches to the Manhattan and George Washington Bridges and the John F. Kennedy Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery.”

    • The Society’s headquarters includes five buildings and a variety of displays and is staffed by a group of dedicated volunteers who are able to answer questions, point out features of displays, and assist those who want to do research.
  • Dr. Job Holmes Cottage and Museum 523 Main St, Calais, ME 04619 | (207) 454-3061
    • Dr. Holmes was the third doctor to practice in this house; the first was Shilometh Whipple, a famous Boston physician and the second was Dr. Cyrus Hamlin, the older brother of Hannibal Hamlin, the vice president of Abraham Lincoln. This museum has been restored to look like Dr. Holmes’s home and office and has many pictures, maps, medical equipment, and more.
  • Fort George Wadsworth Cove Rd, Castine, ME 04421
    • While Fort Pentagoet served as a French defense asset, Fort George was build almost 150 years late in the late 18th century by Britain to protect what was then Canada from the revolutionary forces in the colonies, while establishing a new colony under the name of New Ireland. Unlike Fort Pentagoet, Fort George is much more evident by the shape of the mounded earth that formed its outer bounds.
  • Fort Madison Perkins St, Castine, ME 04421
    • Located just off of Perkins Street farther west than Fort Pentagoet, Fort Madison is a smaller fort that was built in the very early years of the 19th century, and was engaged in the War of 1812. The fort was captured by British forces when Castine was occupied for a short time. During this time, the fort was renamed to Fort Castine, before it was taken back by the United States. Today, little more is left than just a bit of the earthen framework that gently shows its outline.
  • Fort O’Brien State Historic Site Fort O’Brien Point, Machiasport, ME 04655 | (207) 941-4014
    • This fort was built in 1775 and saw the first official naval battle of the Revolutionary War, and was destroyed by the British fleet in the same year. It was rebuilt in 1777, and destroyed by the British again in 1814. In 1923 the United States Federal Government decided to deed the site over to Maine, where it was made a State Historic Site in 1966 and is now maintained by the Bureau of Parks and Lands ever since.
  • Fort Pentagoet Perkins St, Castine, ME 04421
    • Though it has been called by different names over the years, Fort Pentagoet sits right on the water. This historic fort, while all but gone due to the passage of many centuries, was one of the first major defensive structures in the area. The structure was built in the 1630s, and over time has been subject to many an invasion.

  • Jonathon Fisher House 44 Mines Rd, Blue Hill, ME 04614 | (207) 374-2459
    •  A Federal-style house from the late 18th century, the Jonathon Fisher House gives the visitor an opportunity to see what life was like in the frontier in Maine. At the time, Blue Hill was considered to be in the northern part of Massachusetts. Jonathon Fisher was a watercolor artist and was also an engraver.

    • Historic land owned by the Jordan family, with trails and river access.
  • Lost Fishermen’s Memorial Park 12 Water St, Lubec, ME 04652 | 207-733-2341
    • “The goal of the park is to honor the brave souls that have lost their lives in the fishing industry off the waters of Washington County, Maine, and Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada.” The memorial serves as an emotional reminder to the community of all the sacrifices made by the brave fishermen.
  • Machias Historic Railroad Station 2 Kilton Ln, Machias, ME 04654 | (207) 255-6621
    • A historic railroad station that was built in 1898 and is one of the five remaining stations built by the ambitious but unsuccessful Washington County Railroad.
  • McCurdy Smokehouse Museum 50 Water St, Lubec, ME 04652 | (207) 733-2197
    • Last traditional smoked-herring facility in the United States, which closed its doors in 1991. On July 15, 1993, the smokehouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It now features rotating exhibits with arts and crafts and a gift shop.

    • See the mustard-making process and sample each of their small-batch mustard flavors at America’s last remaining stone-ground mustard mill.

    • 2,800-acre Natural Area where you can explore walking trails, beaches, bogs, forest, spectacular ocean headlands, or a picnic with an ocean or lighthouse view. There are great hiking trails, a museum, and the Fireside Restaurant and the Prince Cafe.

    • The Ruggles House is a gorgeous example of Federal style architecture, a true local landmark in the region. Open between June and October, the house has been beautifully preserved and artifacts have been found and placed in areas of the house as if the family still inhabits it!
  • Saint Croix Island International Historic Site 84 St. Croix Dr, Calais, ME 04619 | (207) 454-3871
    • This historic site overlooks the Saint Croix Island, which is located between the borders of Maine and New Brunswick. Visits to the island itself are discouraged because of its fragility, but at the historic site, there is a trail with bronze sculptures of French settlers and the Passamaquoddy people. There are also ranger-guided programs, indoor exhibits, artifacts, and a Junior Ranger program for kids.

    • A historic house built by a relative of one of the earliest settlers in Columbia Falls, the Samuel Bucknam House was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970s. The house dates back to the early 19th century, offering a glimpse into the past!
  • Sedgwick-Brooklin Historical Society 575 North Sedgwick Rd, Sedgwick, ME, 04676 | (207) 359-8086
    • Historical society that covers the Brooklin and Sedgwick area.
  • Small Town X Fisherman Statue 44 Water St, Eastport, ME 04631
    • In 2001, a Fox reality TV show called Murder in Small Town X was filmed in Eastport, Maine about a dinner murder mystery with contestants who had to collect clues from actor “townspeople” to solve the murder. The fisherman statue was made for the show, and although it was cut from the show’s budget the statue was made anyway and became an Eastport classic for various reasons, including its goofiness and symbolism. The winner of the show, Ángel Jarbe, Jr., a Bronx firefighter, was killed in the World Trade Center on September 11, one week after the series finale so the statue is also a memorial for Mr. Juarbe.
  • The Mermaid – Statue by Richard Klyver 44 Water St, Eastport, ME 04631
    • Beautiful bronze statue along Eastport’s shore-walk inspired by the iconic “Little Mermaid” statue in Copenhagen, Denmark. This statue took five years to make and was finished in 2015, and has become an iconic part of Eastport.
  • The Silsby Plain and the Whale’s Back Aurora, ME 04408
    • These two places are geological features that were created by ancient glaciers. Check them out to see home old history!

    • The Wilson Museum brings together artifacts and stories of humanity’s past all across the planet. The museum dates back over a century, and has been education people for generations of our shared history of not only us but the planet that we all live on. The John Perkins house is a colonial house that the museum has been involved with touring, that lets people take a step back in time to see what life was like in a coastal town during colonial times.

    • Here you can find artifacts, historical displays, and art by the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot Native American tribes. There is also a gift shop and a Touch Tank for kids. Admission is free, and donations are accepted!
  • Washington County Courthouse Heritage Center Museum and Genealogy Research Room 85 Court House St, Machias, ME 04654 | (207) 225-3127
    • At this courthouse, there are two rooms dedicated to genealogy research materials and information on Maine families.
  • Witherle Woods Castine, ME 04421 | (207) 259-5040
    • Witherle Woods became open to the public in 1985, and has come to host 6.5 miles of trails that wind through beautiful Maine forest, encompassing centuries of history within the foliage. The area has a heavy history of battles fought during colonial and post-colonial times, evidenced by the remnants of batteries and artifacts found through archeological digs.

Western Maine

    • This was the home of Andover’s old fire company, and comes with a colorful history!
  • Bell Hill Meetinghouse 191 Bell Hill Rd, Otisfield, ME 04270
    • This historic meetinghouse church is an excellent example of the Federal Greek Revival style popular during the nineteenth century.

    • With eight exhibit rooms and nine-period rooms, learn about the history of Bethel and the surrounding White Mountain area.
  • The Brickett Place Brickett Pl, Stow, ME 04037
    • This 1830’s settler home is the oldest standing structure in the area, and has been preserved as an educational site. Open weekends during the summer months.

    • This local historical society is open to the public May-October, and offers fascinating insights into the town’s past!

    • This highly active historical society runs a museum, gift shop, and public event space for the local community!
  • Dead River Historical Society 171 Main St, Stratton, ME 04982 
    • This classic building houses a wonderful collection of artifacts, pictures, furniture, and more of the Dead River area including the lost villages of Flagstaff Lake. The Flagstaff and Dead River villages were lovely mountain towns with farms, schools, and general stores. The villages disappeared when the valley was flooded to bring in hydro-electric power.
  • Dixfield Opera House Dixfield, ME 04224
    • This historic building has housed an opera venue, restaurant, movie theater, Odd Fellows lodge, and event hall. It remains available for event rentals and stands as a testament to Dixfield’s past.
  • Dr. Moses Mason Historic House 14 Broad Street, Bethel, ME
    • “One of the finest Federal-style residences in its region, the Dr. Moses Mason House was constructed in 1813 on a spacious lot facing onto the common at Bethel Hill village. “

    • This well-maintained historic house is one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in Western Maine, and definitely worth stopping to see while visiting Paris.

    • This society works hard to preserve and promote the history of the many Finnish settlers in the West Paris area.

    • The building housing Hamlin Memorial Library, named for the nephew of former Vice President Hannibal Hamlin who purchased and donated the building, was originally the Oxford County Jail, making it one of the most unique-looking libraries with a colorful history.

    • This massive collection of antique and unique dolls is housed in the historic Fryeburg Town House and maintained by the Fryeburg Historical Society. Don’t miss this quirky and unique display!
  • Historic Forest Lodge Upton, ME 03579
    • This historic lodge complex, located deep within the Maine woods, was once home to famous author Louise Dickinson Rich, and is a prime example of an early 20th century forest lodge.
  • J&O Irish Store ME 140, Hartford, ME 04220
    • The J&O Irish Store is an historic building in Hartford that housed one of the first stores in the area. It is now used by the Hartford Historical Society as a museum for their collections.

    • This historical society was established in 1991 by locals concerned that the area’s history was not being preserved properly!
  • Lee’s Filling Station Cross St, Andover, ME 04216
    • This quirky old gas station offers a slice of life from many years ago. Worth a stop for anyone passing through town!
  • Levi Sargent House 747 Gore Rd, Otisfield, ME 04270
    • This house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is one of few surviving log houses built in the nineteenth century remaining in Maine today. The house is named after the minister Levi Sargent, an early Otisfield settler and owner of this land.
  • Lost Villages of Flagstaff Lake
