St. Francis
Welcome to St. Francis!
St. Francis is “a caring, friendly community of 485 individuals. Our town lies on the banks of the St. John and St. Francis rivers, on the border with New Brunswick, Canada.” According to Maine an Encyclopedia, “The town was settled in the 18th century by Acadians fleeing the British and by French speaking people from Canada. It was organized as a plantation on May 29, 1875; incorporated as a town on March 1, 1967.”
Traditional industries included farming and logging. French and English are both commonly spoken. The town is located on the St. John Valley Cultural Byway and is a popular destination for its convenient access to the North Maine Woods, for its vast wilderness and opportunities for outdoor recreation and sport.
