About

Our program prepares students for careers as performing arts educators or professional performers. As the flagship campus of the University of Maine System, we are dedicated to our mission of service to the citizens of Maine. Both students and faculty of the School of Performing Arts are active at the University level as well as in surrounding communities.  We are very proud of the education UMaine students receive, of the ambitious slate of performances put forth each year that are made available to not only our campus community but to the public, and of the reputation our faculty and students have earned. We believe strongly in our outreach programs and the many activities at the state, national and international levels of our students and faculty. We invite you to find yourself in the arts here at the University of Maine School of Performing Arts.

Undergraduate Studies

The Division of Music provides education of undergraduate and students majoring in music, as well as that of interested students from the university at large. Through the integration of academics and performance, the division furthers the knowledge and appreciation of music on campus, throughout the state, in the region, and beyond. Teaching, service and creative activity are principally focused on professional degree programs that serve the music education community.

Within the Division of Theatre & Dance, the student will likely explore all areas of the theatre curriculum, but they can also elect to focus on a specific area of interest by selecting a group of courses beyond the core requirements. These specific areas of interest might include History, Literature, and Performance Studies; Directing; Acting; Design; and/or Technology. Learning by participation is our philosophy and one of our strengths.

Graduate Studies

The Division of Music offers graduate studies leading to the Master of Music degree in Music Education (with optional emphasis in conducting) and the Master of Music degree in Performance. These majors are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

Individualized curricula are designed to meet students’ interests and needs while offering a balanced program of academic and professional courses.

MSYM

Immerse yourself in music this summer on the beautiful UMaine campus!

For more than half a century, Maine Summer Youth Music (MSYM) has provided an immersive music experience for hundreds of young campers on the beautiful University of Maine campus, and we welcome you to join us this summer as we make beautiful music together once again.

Donate to MSYM

MSYM offers large and small ensembles and classes in music areas, including:

  • Jazz Ensemble
  • String Ensemble
  • Concert Band
  • Symphonic Band
  • Musical Theatre
  • Chorus

MSYM instructors are drawn from University of Maine faculty and staff, as well as from the wealth of respected musicians and teachers to be found all across Maine.

Please make sure you read each form completely prior to packing and coming to MSYM.

Some forms are labeled Print and Sign; those forms must be signed and brought with you to camp.  Do not forget your insurance card with the medical form!

This information is the same for both camps.  Camps are tracked separately and JR and SR camp-specific things will be noted in the step-by-step process.  There is a step-by-step included in the packet, but it may be updated prior to camp starting.  An updated copy will be provided via QR code upon arrival.  If you do not have a smartphone, we will have hard copies available.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me at: cgwhite@maine.edu or 207.581.1232.

Camp Info

This PDF will contain general MSYM info, a step-by-step guide to registration day, a listing of rules and regulations, commuter information, our attendance policy, and info on the Honors Recital and the final day’s schedule. We’ve also included a separate campus map with areas of interest marked.

Any questions not answered here can be directed to camp director Christopher White.

Print & Sign Permissions and Releases

The following link includes downloadable permission and release forms. These will all need to be signed and returned in order for your student to be enrolled in MSYM.
