Mitchell Naming Review Task Force — March 13, 2026

In light of emerging information, University of Maine President/University of Maine System (UMS) Vice Chancellor Joan Ferrini-Mundy and Chancellor Dannel Malloy recently initiated a task force to review and make recommendations regarding institutional naming and honors within the System associated with former U.S. Senator George Mitchell.

Consistent with the charge from the Chancellor and President/Vice Chancellor and also UMS Board of Trustees’ Policies 315 Commemorative Naming or Renaming of Academic Units and Programs and 803 Naming and Renaming of Physical Facilities, the task force is soliciting stakeholder and public comment.

On behalf of the task force, you are invited to submit your comments through this anonymous form by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2026. While submissions will be anonymous, you must indicate your relationship to the university on the form, and your feedback will be made public as part of the task force’s report.

The Mitchell Naming Review Task Force will review and carefully consider the commentary it receives. Please feel free to share the form link with others you believe may also wish to provide comments.
