The UMaine Undergraduate Building Science Certificate allows UMaine students of any degree program to gain expertise in modern, resilient, energy efficient buildings, including their design, construction, and planning.

Requirements

The Undergraduate Building Science Certificate Program requires a total of 12 credits of coursework taken in 300 and 400 level courses offered by a wide variety of units related to Building Science. A maximum of one course (up to 3 credits) may be transferred from outside the University of Maine to the program for credit. 

Students must receive a GPA of 2.5 or higher in courses counting towards the certificate, and must receive a minimum grade of a C in each course. 

Eligibility Criteria

All students, including non-degree seeking students, and students in any major or degree program are eligible to enroll in the certificate program, provided the prerequisites for each course in the sequence are met.

The courses completed for this certificate program may be counted towards an undergraduate or graduate degree per the guidelines of the respective undergraduate or graduate degree program.

Educational Objectives

Through this certificate, students will:

  • Understand typical features of a building that impact energy efficiency and human comfort, including water, air, and moisture control layers. 
  • Know materials typically used in building construction and how they may be improved. 
  • Design buildings to be more energy efficient and healthier for occupants.
    Understand the impact of codes, regulations, and economic factors on the design of buildings.
  • Understand and analyze energy used in homes, including thermal and electrical, and the connections between this energy use and the local and national communities. 
  • Be capable of applying improved building design practices to multiple scales of buildings, and to new and retrofit applications.

Note: All acceptable courses are 3 credits, so 4 courses are required to satisfy the 12 credit requirement for the certificate.
